Dear Sir,
This week we mark the ninetieth anniversary of the Great Betrayal of Armenians and Assyrians in the Mudros armistice with Turkey (30th October 1918). We ask you to consider what measures of restitution are suitable. The lack of a homeland for Assyrians and the continued Turkish control of Western Armenia is a direct result of the armistice. The Assyrians in particular have been subjected to subsequent massacres emanating from Britain’s hand in the creation of Iraq, a centralised state without provision for the protection of minorities. It is indicative of our selective amnesia about our past responsibilities that only two MPs have signed the EDM on the 75th anniversary of the Simel massacre of Assyrians in 1933 soon after the end of the British Mandate.

The inaugural address of Ilham Aliev, President of Azerbaijan, reiterates that Azerbaijan’s stance on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict remains unchanged, Dr Armen Ayvazyan, Head of the ARARAT Center for Strategic Research told a REGNUM correspondent.
Dr Ayvazyan noted that Baku rules out, even in theory, the possibility for reasonable compromise with the Armenian side regarding not only the question of territories, but also the future status of Nagorno-Karabakh. “As a matter of fact, the Armenian side is dealing with nothing less than Baku’s demand for total and unconditional surrender of Armenia.” This uncompromising stance of Azerbaijan completely undermines the current negotiation process, making it a common farce, which in the future will beget nothing but a full-scale war,” Dr Ayvazyan stresses.

Interview by Armen Ayvazyan to Yerkir weekly, 26 September 2008
Translation from Armenian
According to Dr. Armen Ayvazyan, Director of Ararat Center for Strategic Research, the first stage of Armenia-Turkey dialogue proceeded in unequal conditions, with the Turkish side taking the upper hand. But we may see Turkey scoring many more goals into the net of Armenian diplomacy, so that, in Ayvazyan’s words, soon we may be talking of a hockey rather than a football game. In an interview with Armen Ayvazyan, we present his answers to a range of questions on the Armenian-Turkish issues.

The glaring theoretical confusion and situational policy making by Republic of Armenia’s (RA) Foreign Ministry involve several vitally important areas, including:
• The actual degree of RA willingness to compromise in the settlement of the Artsakh conflict;
• The strategy of developing Armenia-Russia and Armenia-NATO relations;
• The proposed solutions and the contours of Armenian interests in Armenian-Georgian relations (including in the issue of Armenians of Javakhk);
• However, the uncertainties of RA foreign policy are especially evident in the inadequate positions towards Turkey. These positions, in our opinion, are the source of general lack of focus and purpose in RA foreign policy.

4500th ANNIVERSARY OF THE VICTORY OF HAYK
The year 2008 marks the 4500th anniversary of the victory of the Armenian Patriarch Hayk against Bel at the battle of Hayots Dzor (south of Lake Van).
Thе calendar calculation of the date, based on the periodicity of “Hayk’s Cycle” of the “Ancient Armenian era”, was done by the famous Armenologist Levond Alishan (1820-1901). There was no leap-year in the ancient Armenian era, since a year was always considered to consist of 365 days, hence the year and the date were movable. Thus 1460 years according to the Julian Calendar amount to 1461 years according to the Armenian Calendar. By such periodicity of the “Cycle of Hayk”, 2492 BC denotes the year of Hayk’s victory. The beginning of the victorious year was Navasard 1 (=August 11).* The Armenian Apostolic Church has kept counting the years in the Church Calendar according to “Hayk’s Cycle”.

A new production is brewing in Hollywood, one that will recreate a much celebrated event from Armenia’s heroic past: the Vartanants War. As was reported in the May 31st edition of The Armenian Reporter, a new film titled “East of Byzantium” is in the planning stage, whose producers are currently holding fundraisers to finance the production. If the roster of the individuals involved in the upcoming production is any indication, the film promises to be in the best traditions of Hollywood’s epic movies: Roger Kupelian, the man behind the visual effects of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Flags of Our Fathers; Serj Tankian from the System of a Down, who will write the music score; comedian Vahe Berberian, etc. In fact, the producers consider the film to be the Armenian “Braveheart”. Surely, such an undertaking deserves applause and all the encouragement and success.

A Sober and Sobering Account of Recent
Developments in Armenia by an Eyewitness
By Armen Ayvazian
Yerevan, Armenia
I have been criticizing this government and predicting such an outcome during recent years. And, by the way, where was Levon Ter Petrossian all this time and why didn’t he raise his voice against any injustice during these long 10 years?!
I’ve been warning about the imminent breakup of the seeming stability again and again in my books, articles and interviews published in Armenian, Russian and English for the last decade. Moreover, they’ve been read by some of the highest representatives of the current establishment. I had a couple of chances to even personally discuss with some of them the criticality of the situation. They did not agree that the situation is as bad as I depicted it and were disturbed and irritated. All of my efforts to bring them back to reality have just resulted not only in my further isolation from the centers of decision-making, but also in attempts to silence and marginalize me. Though they’ve not succeeded, I’m extremely frustrated that all my work has been almost in vain. On February 19, Armenia entered into a completely new and unfavorable phase; the day “X” I was talking about in my “Strategic Gaps” has already arrived.
